چکیده

Allergenicity is defined in this chapter as the capacity to elicit an IgE immune response upon animal or human immunisation or exposure. All newly expressed proteins in genetically modified plants that could be present in the final food or feed destined for human or animal consumption should be assessed for their potential to cause allergic reactions. This should include consideration of whether a newly expressed protein is one to which certain individuals may already be sensitive as well as whether a protein new to the food supply carries the risk to cause allergic sensitisation and to induce allergic reactions in some individuals. The necessity to test for allergenicity of genetically modified organisms destined for animal consumption is supported by the possibility to find back the transgenic protein in animal-derived products for human consumption, such as milk or eggs.

Perspectives for the allergenicity assessment of key allergens in GM plants

Background According to EU legislation, genetically modified plants (GM plants) should follow a scientific assessment of any risk that they may pose to human and animal health, including an allergenicity assessment. According to the EFSA guidance, the allergenicity assessment of GM plants is structured into the assessment of i) the newly expressed proteins and ii) the whole GM plant. For the la...

Prediction of the potential allergenicity of novel proteins

The potential allergenicity of novel proteins expressed in genetically modified organisms is an important item in the safety assessment of these organisms. The various components of the allergenicity assessment include the source of the protein, sequence similarity with known allergenic proteins, in vitro digestibility, sera binding tests, animal models and clinical tests. Recent developments i...

Allergenicity assessment strategy for novel food proteins and protein sources.

To solve the future food insecurity problem, alternative and sustainable protein sources (e.g. insects, rapeseed, fava bean and algae) are now being explored for the production of food and feed. To approve these novel protein sources for future food a comprehensive risk assessment is needed according to the European food legislation. Allergenicity risk assessment might pose some major difficult...
